Black Elk (1863-1950) Oglala Sioux

An Oglala Lakota religious figure and witness to war and violence.  He became a modern spokesperson for the survival of ceremonies, liturgies, and language long outlawed by the United States Government.  He has been the subject of many books written by non-Indian scholars.
